Baking animations

For my M.Sc. thesis I developed under the supervision of Dr. Herb Yang a new model for creating physically-based animations of the baking process using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics framework. This model is capable of reproducing the fluid-solid phase transition, volume expansion, and surface browning that take place during the baking process. This work represents the first time that the baking process has been reproduced in a physically-plausible manner in the domain of computer graphics.

As part of this research an adaptive version of the field function was also developed that would allow the reconstruction of the surface of the fluid as it expands avoiding the creation of holes in the object.

The following animation sequences show how the model is very flexible in that it can reproduce the mechanical properties of a wide array of fluids from thin fluids to semisolids. The sequences presented also show that the proposed model can produce animations of different and peculiar types of bread.
